There Are Only 10 Ways Customers Find You. Pick One.
Key Takeaways
- A funnel is a single path of escalating commitment. Most of what founders call funnels are entrances with nothing behind them.
- Ten funnels, plotted on trust required against price and commitment: speed funnels, fit and authority funnels, trust-first funnels.
- The quiet killer is band mismatch, not bad choice. A $30K sale through a lead magnet converts badly and you conclude your market is cheap. A $200 product behind a discovery call fails and you conclude nobody wants it. Both conclusions are wrong.
- Pick the one channel with evidence — three customers in the last ninety days — write it as steps, and name the funnels you’re deliberately ignoring. Done when it’s written and has worked three times.
Write down your last five customers. How did each one find you?
Do it before you keep reading. It takes ninety seconds.
If those five came to you five different ways, you do not have a funnel. You have five coincidences.
Funnel Accumulation Syndrome
Here is what I see in most businesses under a few million in revenue. The founder has four to six funnels running at once:
- A referral path.
- A DM path that works when they remember to use it.
- A website form.
- A lead magnet from three years ago that still collects the occasional email nobody follows up on.
None of them are finished or measured. All of them are technically alive, which is why none of them get shut off.
That is not a lead generation problem. That is a strategy problem wearing a lead generation costume.
What a funnel actually is
A sales funnel is the path of commitment that converts a lead into a customer.
Path. Singular.
Commitment, meaning it escalates, meaning there are steps and each one asks for a little more than the last.
Most of what founders call funnels are not paths. They are entrances with nothing behind them.
The funnel map
Ten funnels exist. They are not interchangeable, and which one is right for you is decided by two variables.
- Trust required. How much does someone need to believe in you before they say yes?
- Price and commitment. How much are you asking for, in money and in effort from them?
Plot those two and you get 10 funnels:
Speed funnels. Low trust, low commitment. Fast, transactional, volume-friendly.
1. Direct Response
2. Lead Magnet to Nurture
3. Call-First
Fit and authority funnels. Middle of the map. You are qualifying as much as you are selling.
4. Application
5. Tripwire and Ascension
6. Authority
Trust-first funnels. High trust, high commitment. Slow to build, extremely hard to compete with once they run well.
7. Product-Led
8. Relationship and Referral
9. Content Flywheel
10. Account-Based
The mismatch that quietly kills good businesses
Here is the most common failure, and it is not that founders pick a bad funnel. It is that they pick a funnel from the wrong band.
You are selling a $30,000 engagement through a lead magnet and a nurture sequence. That is a speed funnel carrying a trust-first price. It will convert badly and you will think your market is cheap.
Or the reverse. You are selling a $200 product and you have put a discovery call in front of it. Nobody books a call to buy a $200 product. You will think nobody wants it.
Neither conclusion is true. The funnel is in the wrong band for the price and the trust the sale actually needs.
Before you fix your copy, check your funnel. Where does your price sit, how much trust does your sale need, and does the funnel you are running live in that neighborhood?
One funnel. Written down.
The move is not to build a better funnel. It is to pick one and finish it.
Pick the one channel that has produced at least three customers in the last ninety days. Not the one you wish worked. The one with evidence.
Write it down as steps. What happens first, what happens next, who does it, what triggers the next thing. A channel you cannot write as steps is a channel you cannot repeat, cannot hand off, and do not really own.
Then name the funnels you are not running. Commit to ignoring all the other funnels, no matter how shiny they might look when your business gets difficult.
You are done with this when it is written and it has worked at least three times.
Go look at your five customers again. What funnel are you running?
